OpenOffice & NeoOffice
A fully-fledged office suite – for free!
If, like me, you don't really need the Microsoft Office applications very often, but once in a while get sent files that you need either Word or Excel to open, perhaps it's time to check out OpenOffice; a fully-fledged office suite with a very similar set of features to Microsoft Office.
Openoffice.org is a multi-platform, open-source project, and the International Standardisation Organisation has actually just approved the OpenDocument format as the international standard for office data. OpenOffice can open and save to most common file formats, and also includes a handy direct PDF export.
For Mac users there's the OpenOffice-based NeoOffice, which deliveres all the features of OpenOffice within a familiar OS X Aqua interface.
